2012 is rapidly approaching...
What are your resolutions and goals and plans? I plan on saving as much money as possible, quitting my jobs in May, spending the summer traveling around the US and Europe, starting medical school in the fall and doing superb in all my classes.  It’s going to be a great year for me AND you.

Studying for the MCAT Like a Boss: Part 1
All right kids, it’s finally here… you have been preparing for years for this moment. It’s time to study for the MCAT. Consider the MCAT that last door you have to bust down before you can climb the tower and rescue the princess (or prince) and achieve your medical school admissions dreams!! Then you’ll get a notice that your princess (or prince) is in another castle,...

Anesthesia and Consciousness →
A very interesting article about learning about how the brain works in response to anesthesia providing hints about the nature of consciousness.

1 in 5 American women has/will be sexually... →
Helping victims of sexual assault and intimate partner abuse become survivors is one of my biggest passions. This is a great article about what to do if you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted.  (Here’s a revelation to some people- men get raped too, and they can take advantage of all the same options and services women are offered.)

Why are you doing this? Think about it.
[This post is inspired by the events of last night.] I am a volunteer for the local women’s shelter (aka- the Center). Two nights a week, from 6pm-6am, I am on-call to be a hospital advocate for victims of assault. Usually on Sunday and Tuesday nights. Last night, which was a Monday night, I get a call at 3am from the Center. I wasn’t supposed to be on-call, but they told me nobody...

Read a book, read a book, read a muthafuckin...
(image source: http://www.etsy.com/listing/75121425/vintage-book-print-dictionary-or) Reading has always been one of my favorite activities. When I was a scrawny bespectacled acne farm in middle school I did nothing during summers but read. I devoured a book a day, sometimes two. Consequently, I have read a lot and it still seems to not even be a drop in bucket of all the amazing literature out...

anna-belle-laide asked: Hi, I just happened to stumble onto your tumblr. I want to be a doctor too. What medical school are you in? And I didn't do research either but I always thought that would help in getting admitted. Did you do really well in your MCATs? I know a really competitive score really gives you an edge.

Be interesting.
[Note: this is just my story and my experience.] I got into the pre-med game a little late. I started taking my pre-reqs the summer after my sophomore year. So, I was a junior/senior/supersenior with people 2-3 years younger than me in most of those classes and had a non-science major.  Most of the pre-meds I interacted with had known they wanted to the doctors since they were little and had...

Doctors Without Borders, tumblr edition →
This is an amazing organization and anyone going into medicine should really consider how they can use their training to improve the lives of others in the neediest of places on the planet.  Also it’s a nice slap in the face by reality. People whining and posting stupid shit and thinking their lives are sooooo rough… and then there’s the realization that we have no right to...

Introducing: the ALL NIGHTER
All-nighters are not to be approached all willy-nilly. You have to have a plan, a system.  But it’s ok, because you have science on your side. Imagine your finals are a horrifying monster and you are a victorious warrior posing for a portrait with your foot on the corpse of your slain foe. With your sword in the air, Masters of the Universe-style. To start off with, select your location...
